There is no single 2027 color of the year: every paint brand names its own, and this year most of them landed on green or a soft blue. Sherwin-Williams and HGTV Home chose Celery SW 6421, Behr chose Grounded T27-01, Dulux chose Soulful Sage, and Valspar, Glidden, Ace and California Paints all went blue. Benjamin Moore reveals its pick on October 14, 2026 and Pantone usually follows in early December; we will add both here when they are out.

Below: every pick in one table (as of October 12, 2026), where each color works, which sheen to buy, and how painting walls, trim and ceiling the same color ("color drenching") changes how much paint you need.

The two "PPG" colors, explained. They are not a contradiction. ppgpaints.com, Glidden and Pittsburgh Paints belong to Pittsburgh Paints Co., and their U.S. pick is Artifact (PPG10-16). PPG Industries' own corporate announcement names Country Soil (PPG15-30), which it says is available in selected PPG brands across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia. In a U.S. store, Artifact is the one you will find.

Dulux in the U.S. Soulful Sage comes from AkzoNobel's Dulux line, which is sold in the UK and many other markets. Its announcement doesn't list a U.S. retailer, so if you want that look here, pick a similar sage chip from a U.S. brand and compare samples side by side.

Where each color works best

Read the families, not the names. The 2027 list falls into four groups:

  • Light greens (Celery, Soulful Sage). Light enough to use on every wall of a living room, bedroom or kitchen without making it feel smaller. Sherwin-Williams describes Celery as "airy" and pairs it with neutrals, earth tones and a few jewel tones. Pale yellow-greens can lean yellow in warm evening light, so test the sample at night too.
  • Deep greens and browns (Grounded, French Press Coffee). Best where you want a room to feel enclosed and calm: a den, a dining room, a home office, a powder room. Dunn-Edwards specifically suggests drenching small rooms such as a powder room, study or entryway in French Press Coffee.
  • Blues (Cottage Door, Artifact, Vantage Point, Quiet Peace). The mid-tones (Cottage Door, Artifact) behave like a colored neutral and work in bedrooms and offices; the deep ones (Quiet Peace) suit a bedroom, a dining room or cabinetry.
  • Earth tones (Deep Rooted, Country Soil). Warm, saturated and strong. Easiest on one wall, a door or a kitchen island before you commit to a whole room.

Which sheen to buy

The sheen rules don't change because the color is trendy. Use what you would for any color in that room (our paint basics guide has the full sheen table):

SurfaceSheenWhy
Living room, bedroom wallsFlat/matte or eggshellHides wall flaws; deep colors look richest in flat
Kitchen, bath, kids' room wallsEggshell or satinWipes clean
Trim, doors, cabinetsSatin or semi-glossTakes knocks and scrubbing
CeilingFlatHides roller marks and bumps

Sample the exact sheen you plan to buy. The same deep green or brown looks softer and more even in flat and shows more of its undertone in satin, so a flat sample won't tell you how satin cabinets will look.

Easy pairings

Each brand published a palette, but three pairings work with almost all of the 2027 picks:

  • Warm white trim with any of the greens or blues, for the classic look.
  • Natural wood and brass with Grounded, French Press Coffee and Celery. Warm materials keep the deep colors from looking flat.
  • A dusty pink or clay accent with the blues. Valspar pairs Cottage Door with Apricot Blush and Moon Shot; California Paints pairs Quiet Peace with soft browns, greens, yellow and dusty pink.

Color drenching and how much paint it takes

Color drenching means painting the walls, trim and ceiling (sometimes doors too) the same color, often with a different sheen on each surface. It's one of the main ways brands are showing the 2027 colors, and it changes your shopping list in two ways: you buy more of the colored paint, and you stop buying a separate white for the ceiling and trim.

Worked example: a 12 × 12 bedroom, 8-foot ceiling

Using the method in our how much paint for a room guide (about 350 sq ft per gallon per coat, two coats):

SurfaceAreaTwo coatsClassic planDrenched plan
Walls48 ft × 8 ft = 384 sq ft, minus a door (20) and window (15) = 349 sq ft698 sq ft2 gal color2 gal color (eggshell or matte)
Ceiling12 × 12 = 144 sq ft288 sq ft1 gal white ceiling paint1 gal color in flat
Trim, door, baseboard1 qt white semi-gloss1 qt color in satin or semi-gloss
Total colored paint2 gal3 gal + 1 qt

The total amount of paint is about the same; what changes is that all of it is now tinted. Three practical consequences:

  1. Order everything from one batch and box it. Buy all the colored gallons at once and mix them together in a larger bucket ("boxing") so the walls and ceiling match. Different sheens of one color will still look slightly different, which is part of the effect.
  2. Deep colors may need a third coat. Grounded, French Press Coffee and Quiet Peace going over white often need a gray-tinted primer or an extra coat; see primer and how many coats. Add 50% to the color line if you skip the primer.
  3. The ceiling is the hard part. A colored ceiling shows every lap mark. Cut in the ceiling first, keep a wet edge and work across the short side of the room.

Run your own room through the paint calculator: enter the walls, then add the ceiling and trim lines and keep them all in one color.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing from a screen. Paint brands warn that on-screen colors differ from the real paint. Buy a sample or peel-and-stick swatch and look at it in daylight and at night.
  • Testing a tiny patch on a white wall. White around it skews the color. Paint a board or a large swatch at least 2 × 2 ft and move it around the room.
  • Painting the whole house in this year's color. Start with one room, cabinets or a door; a trend color you can repaint in a weekend is a low-risk experiment.
  • Mixing brands' "same" colors. A color matched into another brand's base can come out slightly different. Use the brand's own paint for a drenched room, where every surface sits side by side.
  • Forgetting the ceiling paint in a drench. If you buy only wall gallons you will run short; the ceiling adds roughly 40% to the walls in a 12 × 12 room.

FAQ

What is the 2027 color of the year?

It depends on the brand. Sherwin-Williams and HGTV Home picked Celery SW 6421, Behr picked Grounded T27-01, Dulux picked Soulful Sage and Valspar picked Cottage Door 8004-38E. Glidden picked Artifact PPG10-16, Dutch Boy Deep Rooted 311-7DB, Dunn-Edwards French Press Coffee DEBN07, Clark+Kensington Vantage Point 38B-4 and California Paints Quiet Peace. Benjamin Moore and Pantone had not announced as of October 12, 2026.

Is PPG's 2027 color Artifact or Country Soil?

Both, for different brands. Artifact PPG10-16 is the U.S. pick for Glidden, Pittsburgh Paints and ppgpaints.com (Pittsburgh Paints Co.). Country Soil PPG15-30 is PPG Industries' global pick, sold through selected PPG brands in EMEA, Latin America and Asia.

When will Benjamin Moore and Pantone announce their 2027 colors?

Benjamin Moore's own reveal calendar lists October 14, 2026 at 12 pm Eastern. Pantone has not given a date, but it announced its 2026 color on December 4, 2025, so early December 2026 is likely.

Does color drenching use more paint?

It uses about the same total amount, but all of it is the colored paint. For a 12 × 12 bedroom with 8-foot ceilings that is roughly 3 gallons plus a quart of the color, instead of 2 gallons of color plus white for the ceiling and trim. Deep colors may need an extra coat.
