THE MATH, MADE VISIBLE
How it works
Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height. Subtract door and window areas, then add the ceiling (length × width) if it is being boarded. Sheets = round up(net area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100) ÷ sheet area). Joint compound and tape are estimated from net board area with editable rates. Screws scale with purchased board area: rate per 4 × 8 sheet × purchased area ÷ 32 ft².
Real project examples
A 12 × 10 ft room with ceiling
At 8 ft high the walls are 352 ft². Subtract one 20 ft² door and two 15 ft² windows and add the 120 ft² ceiling: 422 ft². With 10% extra, 464.2 ft² ÷ 32 ft² = 14.5, so buy 15 sheets of 4 × 8. At 1 US gal per 100 ft², compound is 4.22 gal: one 4.5 gal pail. Tape at 37 ft per 100 ft² is about 156 ft (one 250 ft roll), and screws at 32 per 4 × 8 sheet come to 480.
Walls only with 4 × 12 sheets
The same walls without the ceiling are 302 ft². With 10% extra, 332.2 ft² ÷ 48 ft² = 6.9, so buy 7 sheets of 4 × 12. Compound is 3.02 gal (one 4.5 gal pail), tape about 112 ft, and screws 336 at the same rate per 32 ft² of board.
Before you buy
- The compound default of 1 US gal per 100 ft² reflects USG’s published coverage for Sheetrock All Purpose ready-mixed joint compound: approximately 10 gal per 1,000 ft² of gypsum panels. Lightweight and other compounds differ; use your product’s data sheet.
- Tape at 37 ft per 100 ft² and 32 screws per 4 × 8 sheet are planning examples, not specifications. Fastener spacing depends on framing, board type and whether the board is on a wall or ceiling; follow the board manufacturer and local requirements.
- Openings are subtracted at their full area. Installers often board over small openings and cut them out, so you may prefer to subtract only large openings.
- 4 × 12 sheets mean fewer joints but are heavy and long. Check that your supplier stocks them and that they fit through doors and stairways; ceilings may need a helper or a lift.
- Moisture-resistant, fire-rated and other specialty panels are separate products. Estimate areas that use different panels separately.
- Corner bead, primer, adhesive, insulation and framing are not included.
Questions worth asking
How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12 × 10 ft room?
With 8 ft walls, one door, two windows, the ceiling and 10% extra, this estimate gives 15 sheets of 4 × 8 or 10 sheets of 4 × 12. Your own openings, ceiling choice and allowance change the count.
Why are compound and tape based on board area rather than sheets?
Compound makers state coverage per area of finished panels. Using net board area keeps the cutting allowance and sheet rounding from inflating the finishing estimate.
Should I include the ceiling?
Only if you are hanging new board on it. Choose Walls only for wall-only jobs.
Does the screw count apply to nailed or adhesive installs?
No. It assumes screw-fastened board at the rate you enter. Adjust or ignore it for other fastening methods.
